Clean hands the way to stop flu
If everyone were to wash their hands the risk of colds, flu and even bird flu would be much less say experts.
Studies have shown that viruses can survive on human hands for several hours and are spread by direct contact as well as through coughs and sneezes. The best way to break the chain is for people to wash their hands.

Water companies to put small firms out of business
As water companies seek permission to introduce drought orders many small businesses that depend on constant water supplies are under threat.
Window cleaners and car washing companies in particular are at severe risk. To comply with health and safety legislation or to reduce water consumption many have invested several thousand pounds in equipment.'

Clean uniforms and 'clever cleaning' will prevent infection
Hospital workers at UNISON's health conference called for proper laundry facilities for their uniforms to help combat MRSA. They complained that domestic washing machines are not capable of ensuring that any infection carried on their uniforms - from bodily fluid splashes - are destroyed completely. There is also widespread concern that washing uniforms and the family wash in the same machine is a danger that has so far gone unrecognised.
Consultant microbiologist Dr Stephanie Dancer, meanwhile, who has studied MRSA and other infections for nearly 20 years, knocked measures that focus on cleaning floors and toilets as they miss out on the vital bedside surfaces such as the cabinet, tray and call buttons. She said that her research shows that these surfaces are prime carriers of MRSA.

'Robo-Roach' makes its debut
Are you ready for the robot cockroach??? The robot smells and acts just like a cockroach, fooling the real insects into accepting it as one of their own. Through its behaviour, the robot can persuade a group of cockroaches to venture out into the light despite their normal preference for the dark so they can be caught.
New Scientist explains that cockroaches and other insects such as ants display 'collective intelligence'. This means that complex group behaviour emerges from simple individual action and interaction.
'The 'Insbot' contains several computer processors hooked up to a camera and an array of infrared proximity sensors that allow the robot to identify obstacles and real cockroaches. To the human eye it might not look much like an insect, but cockroach pheromones and carefully programmed behaviour are enough to convince real roaches that it is one of the gang,' it says.
