All About Steam

All about steam

The term ‘steam cleaner’ is commonly and often wrongly used for various types of machines, including steam, vapour steam and pressure washers. Here’s a guide to help you find the right machine for you

Vapour Steam

There are basically 5 types of “steam cleaners” as depicted on these pages, and here’s a guide to assist you

All electric low volume vapour steam cleaners

Dry steam

Low volume

These machines run from either a 240v or 415v supply and heat the water with an  element without the need for any other fuel source. This means that high temperature dry steam of up to 180ºC is produced in a clean zero emissions boiler and can be used inside. The steam production is lower therefore they are more suited to detail cleaning internally or where fumes are a problem.

Electrically Driven and Oil Fired Steam Cleaner

Dry/wet steam

Medium volume

These machines are run from either a 12v 240v or 415v supply and heat the water with the use of an oil fired burner (diesel) This means that much more quantity of steam is produced in the boiler meaning 2 operators can use the machine at the same time and they are generally used outside. The steam production is high and can be used as wet or dry steam and therefore they are more suited to larger surface cleaning  often with 2 outlets.

Electrically driven & oil fired high pressure cleaners

High pressure/wet steam

Medium/High volume

These machines are often referred to as steam cleaners but are not so. They run from a 240v or 415v supply and heat the water with the use of an oil fired burner (diesel). This means that a jet of high pressure water is produced at around 90ºC and they are generally used outside. Some models can reduce the water flow to increase the temperature and therefore produce wet steam of around 150ºC

Electrically driven & heated high pressure cleaners

High pressure

Medium volume

These machines are often referred to as steam cleaners but are not so. They run from a 415v 32amp or 64amp supply and heat the water from an all electric element, so the machine is fume free and can be used inside. A jet of high pressure is produced at around 80ºC and the machine can be used for internal pressure washing inside where fumes are a problem. The hot water production is a higher volume but lower temperatures
